Default ETM Reload after swap

How is everyone, hopefully better then me at this present moment. Been really put off with Volvo customer service this week, with their promise to call me back to organise a booking. This carry on is going for a week. Every day I call them to remind and I only get back is we are very busy, someone will call you shortly.

Rights, to the point. I got refurbished ETM of a ACtronics and it’s without or with the wrong software on it. They did include a letter that I will need to get in touch with Volvo or independent Volvo specialist to reload the ETM. The problem is, living in Scottish highlands, Inverness to be precise, the only Volvo place is the main dealer. As above mentioned, I haven’t got far with them.

Is there any other way to reload/pair the ETM with the ECM?

Thank you.

PS
It’s a Volvo C70 2.3T5 2000.

Sorry, forgot to mention. They sent me refurbished one back but not mine. Yes the car starts but runs like a bag of ****. Fault code leads to ETM not recognised

Unfortunately it will mean a trip to volvo as they are the only place that can carry out a reload of the etm.

Hi,
I got this procedure from Deathrider/Simon. I haven’t tried it yet. It might work.
Turn the ignition on for 10min but don’t start it. Position 2.
Turn ignition off for 10 min.
Start the car up and leave it to tick over for 20 min. Just let it idle.
Turn car off for 20 min.
Start the car and take it for a Leisurely drive, slowly increasing the throttle. It could take 200 miles for the car to learn the new ETM.

You could try it, but before you do, you probably have to clear your ETM codes, if not disconnect the negative battery terminal for 30mins, might be longer or shorter, maybe someone could weigh in?

Hope this helps.

Hi eeskip

As far as I know the software for the ETM comes in two flavours: either for a turbo engine (either T5 2315cc or LPT 2435cc), or for a normally aspirated engine. I dont know about 2 litre engines.

Sounds like they have given you an ETM with software for NA, when you need an ETM with the software for a turbo engine.

(There are old and new versions for each flavour, but that is another matter,. The latest version includes some self testing diagnostics).

Volvo or a Volvo indie could load the right software, and hopefully give you the latest version as well. Try and get a price for doing that. If very expensive I would try to get money back from ACTronics.

I think the procedure that spawned mentions, is so that the ETM can "learn" the new engine. But I don't think that will help if you have the wrong software in.

I have a spare working ETM from a C70 2001 Low pressure Turbo. I could sell you that but I would have to make up my mind about a price.

HTH

I had an ACtronics refurbished ETM and it worked OK out the box but it did have same part number as the old unit so maybe I was lucky however their website clearly states a software reload will be necessary so I already had a quote from my local Lookers Volvo and they said £70 less 10% discount as a VOC member.
The software has to be purchased and downloaded from Volvo so not many independents have the knowledge and experience needed. If I were you I'd be popping down the dealer and talking directly to the service manager.

Best of luck

John

Thanks guys for all the replies, I got it booked in with Volvo tomorrow for the ETM reload. Will let you know how I get on and what it cost for some references if anyone else will need.

I did try the switch on ignition and leave, but that didn’t work.

Thanks

Got the ETM reloaded, car still doesn’t run properly. An yes Volvo up in highlands charged me £179 for the software reload. Dam. Seems like the VVT solenoid is gone as well. Just topical domino effect.
