Default 2000 V70TDI Engine light with MOT Approaching!

Evening

I have an MOT due in about 10 days and have just found out that nowadays an engine warning light may be an automatic fail.

I've been searching through the forums and it sounds like the only consumer-level code reader that might have worked for this was the BSR PPC system, which is no longer available.

I've tried disconnecting the battery for 30 mins or so to no avail so can anyone help with suggestions to the following:

- New ways to read fault codes from a 2000 V70 TDI?
- Anyone with an appropriate code reader in the region around Aldershot, Hampshire?
- Anyone with a suitable code reader for sale?

- Top tips on things to try in the event of an engine (emission system?) light?
- Good garages who could help at sensible prices in this area?
- Obvious questions I've missed!!!

Thanks in advance,

Bill

Injection pump timing? It's quite critical on these engines and doesn't need to be out by much to bring the engine light on. That's where I would start unless you know it to be good.

A search on dynamic pump timing or injection pump timing will probably yield more information than you could possibly want.

I sell brand new, tested and guaranteed working Dice for £100.
I can also supply a ready set up laptop if you don't have a suitable one to run the Vida software.

If you have the 15.8 ecu, Dice and Vida will read all modules and run functions like the fuel pump timing utility.
Vida has a full parts catalogue and workshop manual too.

Thanks Martin
I did wonder about that as it appears to be a source of many problems and is prone to drifting off nominal values. I've generally assumed that it is okay since it is not particularly smokey (for this engine) and power seems okay. Fuel consumption - despite what the trip computer says - is not amazing though so you may well be correct!

I may have to see if I can get it checked at a local independent as I've not got the correct code reader - I'll follow-up this in another reply, below!

Thanks for your help

Bill

Hi Cheshired5

That is quite tempting as trips to garages with the correct kit may prove to be an expensive hobby! My worry is that I'm likely not going to get it in time do do anything for my MoT next week. I should probably consider it as a longer-term investment though (subject to a happy outcome next week).

Do I assume correctly that the device you are sending is a copy and not a Volvo tool? Does it come with the VIDA software and what are the requirements for the laptop i.e. USB 2.0 interface & Windows 7 only? I don't currently have a Win 7 laptop but may be able to run an extension to the car from my desktop.

Kind regards,

Bill

Default DICE in the Aldershot area

If I can't get a copy of DICE and VIDA in time for my MoT, is there anyone in the Aldershot (or surrounding) area who might be able to help help with a code read??

Many thanks

Bill

Although pump timing is a prime candidate, there are other things that can bring on the engine warning light and some of these are easily checked. Air leaks from perished hoses on the induction side can upset things. It may be worth checking all the little hoses around the EGR valve and MAF.

As an aside, starting ability may suffer if the pump timing is off. When it's right, these engines usually start within a turn or two in the British climate.

Doubtless, others will have suggestions too. As usual, do the easy and cheap stuff first.

Thanks Martin. Will have a good poke around and check the easy stuff!

It is a good starter in normal weather but I'd be interested to see how good the timing is as it may improve efficiency a little too.

Hi, I've been an MoT tester for over 15 years, and I can confirm the engine light is NOT a fail for a pre-2007 diesel car. Though it would be nice to get it fixed, though this may give you a bit more time.

Twntechservices, you are a star!

I've just been out inspecting hoses etc and not found anything and just came in to see if it was worth trying to clean the MAF and found your post.

I agree that it would be nice to get to the bottom of this but I'd not found this exemption before and it certainly relieves the time pressure!

For anyone finding this thread, here's the link to the relevant material. It is right at the bottom of the page so scroll up from the bottom. This is the relevant para:

Engine malfunction indicator lamp
Turn on the ignition and check that the engine malfunction indicator lamp (MIL) illuminates and then goes off. On some vehicles it will be necessary to start the engine before the MIL goes off.

You need to inspect MIL fitted to diesel vehicles with 4 or more wheels and first used on or after 1 July 2008.

Kit cars, amateur built vehicles and American pickups are not required to be fitted with an engine MIL.

Many thanks,

Bill
