Gearbox conversion
Hi,
I am currently converting my 164E from m400 to m410 overdrive gearbox. I bought a used m410 gearbox, had it checked out and fitted new front and rear oil seals. I have worked out the wiring (different reverse light switch as well as the obvious need to add overdrive wiring). I also bought the appropriate, shorter propshaft and had this balanced with new UJs and centre bearing support fitted. My crank rear oil seal has been leaking, so I will take the opportunity to replace it along with the clutch and cover. So, it's going well - but I now need to find a 164 O/D rear gearbox cross member, as quickly as possible (ad in "parts wanted" section). Regards John |

Hi,
I saw an ad for "164 plus spares". I went to see it and bought the spares but not the car. Came with m410 box and shorter prop-shaft. It makes a big difference to the 164E. Previously 4000rpm was 80mph in 4th, now I can cruise at 100mph at the same engine speed. In terms of the Amazon, I'm not an expert but I think any 140, 160 or P1800 overdrive gearbox will fit. You may need to modify the tunnel to accommodate the remote gearshift (shorter leaver). Gearboxes sometimes turn up on ebay. Otherwise I think you'll need to phone around old Volvo specialists. This is a "top end" US supplier. They may be able to advise on suppliers of used parts? http://www.v-performance.com/about.html Regards John |
