Definitely get Volvo shoes though.

My car recently failed its MOT with non-functioning handbrake/excessive imbalance. I just replaced the shoes. I followed a recommendation I read on here somewhere to only use genuine Volvo shoes. On replacing I found the old ones were aftermarket (& looked in great shape). On the subsequent MOT retest the printout from the brake dyno machine showed a big improvement and that both sides were more or less equal.

If you need any bits try Volvopartstrade on ebay. My Volvo shoes were only £24 delivered and from memory they also had big discounts on genuine volvo disc/pad sets.

I think that is copper slip - not rust.

It is coppaslip, a testament to the owners before the penny pincher I got it from. :-)

Btw, it's only got 205,000 miles on it, and it's a 2003 model

I'm dreading taking mine apart...
I agree that a full cleanup and copper grease does make a lot of difference.

It’s dead easy to take apart, even had enough adjustment left to get the handbrake working properly. For piece of mind though, I have new discs, pads, shoes and fittings on their way.

Lol at the shoes though! Definitely on the shopping list!

Dunno whar you may buy, but fyi Mintex are awful quality these days, you may know already, but so much about at prices that seem too good to be true, cos they are, its low-end pattern-part dross. Some is ok, but lots of people with problems, myself included.
Replace the lot this morning, it’s all nice and new now. Had a close look at that disc, looks like it’s been rubbed by a worn out pad, the pads I’ve just replaced are virtually new (shame to chuck them away). Guessing it should have had new discs due to the damage but the previous owner was cutting costs. Also the handbrake shows where virtually new in one side only and as the picture in first post on the other side. Penny pinchers. Don’t you love them!
