Default Rear brakes, don't you just love 'em?

Thought I'd better get around to looking at the rubbish handbrake on the car I bought in Spring as it's the only thing still letting it down. Yes I know I should have gotten around to it right away and in the warm weather, but excuses excuses.....

Just whipped off one of the disc/drums, think I may have a rather comprehensive shopping list, but on the bright side, no sign of delamination on the shoes.

Have a look at the piece of metal on the tyre, that fell out - I think it's the remnants of one of the retaining springs as one is completely missing. Whatever it is, it's certainly made an impression!

And I still need to see why only half the brake disc is being used, looks like the piston isn't pushing smoothly, although there's no dragging....

Thats a very distinct line there though... Makes me wonder if someone fitted old pads with a step, or skimned the disc out of parallel giving it a taper.

Lol at the shoes though! Definitely on the shopping list!

Dunno whar you may buy, but fyi Mintex are awful quality these days, you may know already, but so much about at prices that seem too good to be true, cos they are, its low-end pattern-part dross. Some is ok, but lots of people with problems, myself included.

I dont agree with this.
Quality shoes that simply hold the car are quality shoes that hold the car.
The genuine volvo shoes keep delaminating. How are these superior in any way to Ferodo/Trw/Textar/etc when they keep falling to pieces?
Nothing to say that other brands wont delaminate, but whos to say they will, or maybe last longer before they do. After all another top brand using a different adhesive and material might not suffer the same fate.
Just dont buy cheapo rubbish.

What year is and how many miles are on this car? The hub seems real rusty.

The inadequate design wears unevenly and is oddly out-of-place for a car company which gets many things right.

Frequent inspection / adjustment of the "rubbish handbrake" is required.

Anybody know if the "P3" or other Volvo models have an improved design?

Buy the adjustable spreader when you buy your new hardware and keep on top of it.

The friction material has a different profile than others, that allows full contact on the drum. I know this as I have compared other makes.

When I had a P3 it had an electronic handbrake. It was very effective but I don't know how it worked.

Well that is interesting I have to say!
However, I wonder if thats just to get around the lack of internal adjustment, if one were to fit the 850/P1 adjuster rods, maybe this profile might be redundant...

My opinion is that the handbrake system 13-18 years old just needs refreshment.
New cables, shoes, disks and pads, cleaning, smoothing and lubing the contact areas and pins.
Works smooth, even and no need for any upgrades.
