I would be betting pints that it is one of the propshaft joints. It's unlikely to be a rear CV joint as there's little to no power going to them at 50 mph.
If the front or rear prop joint has play in it, the whole propshaft can resonate and create a whiny droning noise. This gets substantially worse at around 55 mph when the torque converter locks as more of the engine vibration is transmitted through the drivetrain.

Hi, my 2003. My xc90 165k has had a slight drone all the time I have owned it (2 years). At first it was not noticeable as both wheel bearings were noisy. Now both replaced. Still same drone. Since then had to replace transfer box along with spline drive. My indi also checked prop front coupling all now fine, but still the slight drone noise.
It really does not bother me, so will leave well alone for the time being,, covered 3k miles last month, but usually low mileage short trips. No change. It appears to be in the area just to right of transmission tunnel towards the front. John l |

At the CV joints on the propshaft - if you turn the shaft (rock it with your hand) is there any lash in the joints ?
If you have the time and inclination you could always remove the prop and drive it to see if the noise goes.

Hi guys. Still no closer to sorting this??
I have checked: Bearings: No free play and when spun can't hear any noise or rough feelings but then again I can only hear it at 50 - 60mph Prop shaft: no movm ent in and out, very slight when I turn but I think this is normal? any other ideas guys?? |

My tyres are crap and stepped on the rear, could this cause that even though it stops once I have my foot off the gas pedal?? Also how does the AWD system work with this? reason I ask is do the rear wheels only work once front wheels lose grip or is the hadlex system cutting in once I put light pressure on the gas pedal and it's cutting the rear drive in causing this? |

Since you've ruled out bearings and prop shaft then the most likely cause is tyres. Had a drone from one of my cars and I was convinced it was a front wheel bearing, all the symptoms including louder noise when I turned into the side the noise was from. New set of tyres and tracking cured it completely

Speed related drone=prop shaft. Had mine changed under warranty. Unplug feed to pump on rear diff and see if drone goes goes. beware car acts quite differently without power going to rear!
