Thumbs up Beautiful 144 For Sale

Reluctant sale of our 1972 tax exempt 144 deluxe. Mot to March 2013. Show winning car with many trophies including, with a previous owner, BKV. Restored to a very high standard by previous owner a few years ago, low mileage. Selling due to not getting opportunity to show as we like to go for a weekend and take caravan, the Volvo is as standard, no extras added and we do not wish to spoil this by adding a towbar. We only did 300 miles last year. For anyone who likes to go to shows and be a proud owner coming away with a trophy this could be for you. It has an agreed value of £8000. I refused to sell to one potential buyer as he wanted it for his dad who was nearly 90 to use as an everyday car! if you are a serious classic car enthusiast then our asking price is around £5300.

I've just seen the single picture of the car on CarandClassic.

The car looks in fantastic condition and I hope it finds a new owner who will continue to cherish it and keep it as original as possible.

Looks absolutely gorgeous - good luck with the sale.

In all honesty I do think you're setting the price bar very high - but I'm sure that you've considered things carefully.

But it's winter and out of the classic car show season, it's a car that's not everyone's idea of a conventional 'classic' (ie no wood and leather and not a Jag, a Merc or a Triumph), it's not an original car but has been previously restored, and so adding all these factors together then £5k + is top dollar, and may be as much as three times the sort of price that a nice 144 would be expected to achieve. Arguably, being north of Watford is a bit limiting too.

Prices in Europe tend to be higher for old Volvos than the UK. I know that when I sold my ES a few years ago the more serious enquiries came from Holland and Switzerland, and the car eventually went to a British ex-pat buyer in Spain.

Swapping from RHD to LHD is not such a difficult proposition as it would be with a more modern car, and it does look as though some European buyers are prepared to consider doing this. Classic Volvos are more valued and valuable across the North Sea it seems!

If you've set your sights on getting that sort of price then you might want to explore the overseas advertising possibilities. Alternatively you might want to think about one of the specialist classic car auction houses. But again, it's not the ideal time of year to achieve the highest price. If you want to sell in the UK then you might have to wait a while for the right buyer, and with all due respect, if you're expecting to be able to tell the new owner how he can or can't use the car then you might just have a very long wait indeed!

Either way, good luck.

Cheers

Jack
