Default Reversible replacement of radio

Hi,

I have a Volvo 740 turbo diesel manual estate. It has the original CR-702 radio fitted.

I would like to fit a modern unit (probably a Sony) but be able to remove this and replace the original radio when I change vehicles.

As far as I can tell from previous posts the CR-702 feeds the two speakers in the front doors directly, and feeds an amplifier through a DIN lead which in turn feeds the speakers in the rear two doors.

A new radio would normaly feed all four speakers directly.

You have to detach the leads to the rear two speakers from the amplfier (near the steering column) then extend them to reach the new radio, bypassing the amplifier.

The rear two speakers seem to be the issue; if you have to cut the leads from the amplifier then reversibility is a problem.

I have seen a detailed post for the CR-704 which includes cutting the leads, and a post for the CR-702 which implies that there may be a DIN connection out of the amplifier to the rear speakers which can be extended (using another lead) to the back of the new radio.

I also understand that some sort of adapter is needed to fit the radio into the space left when the CR-702 is removed.

Given that it is freezing at the moment, and not likely to improve much in the short term, I am remarkably unenthusiastic about doing all this myself, but I would like to know how to do this so that I can check on what an auto electrician tells me should be done.

So confirmation and/or corrections would be very welcome.

Cheers
Dave R

P.S. Why do I want to change the radio?
I have got used to:
(1) Automatic Freequency changing
(2) Traffic Announcement
(3) An integrated CD player
(3) MP3 capability
all of which are not included in my current radio.

How long are you thinking of running the car for?

Surely selling the car without a radio is not going to lower its value. Cut the leads and be done with it!!!

Cut Cut Cut !!

Or just get some connectors that plug into the connector for the rear speakers...

My 740 only had the speakers in the front, so I have run new cabling to the rear doors for more speakers, and removed the amplifer. I've used some bullet connectors to connect into the plug that was connected to the amp that goes to the front speakers.

There is now a new amplifier in the boot, which drives the sub...
Anyone else have a big sub in a 700 ?

LittleGreyCat, I too didn't want to cut the existing wiring (dirty ideas of putting my car to better than showroom condition and entering BKV)

So I went to halfords and picked up a radio wiring loom adaptor (doesn't matter what car it should be for really) and cut the ends of that would usually go to the cars usual radio loom and extended the wires to battary and speakers and so on, to make up my own loom.
