Default C70 D5 2006 revs issue?

Hi all,

I don`t know if is a normal behaviour or an issue:

My car is a volvo c70 2006 automatic diesel d5 2.4.

Basically when is in drive mode let`s say when i am driving with 25 30 mph and take the foot of the gas pedal the revs are going to idle mode . Is that a normal behaviour? Thank you

L.E. My engine is quite loud compared with my 2011 BMW F10 520D . Anyone has the same opinion or could be a problem with mine?

That sounds exactly like what an automatic should do, at least around town. With an auto, there isn't the direct mechanical connection between the engine and the wheels like you have with a manual gearbox when the clutch is in. You can increase engine revs without increasing road speed. When you don't need the engine to accelerate the car or maintain its speed, it returns to idle.

At higher speeds in its high gear(s), it probably does have a 'lockup' after x mph or x000 revs where the road speed will increase proportionately with the engine revs. Having never owned an automatic though, I don't know if it would still keep the engine revs when you come off throttle in those circumstances.

Yes it is quite normal & just to add to Proghound's explanation it's quite an old-school auto, the Geartronic, I find myself selecting lower gears manually on descending hills or slowing down to get some engine braking.
The Merc E320CDI I had some years back had an attitude (not altitude) sensor, which detected when you were descending a hill & would hold a gear for engine braking

Yes normal after a certain Gearbox software update some years ago which drastically changed how the gearbox works ... Saves fuel and Reduces emissions ...

That's interesting, so how were they set up before, with engine braking?

Mine disengages below about 40 mph. I don't understand how that would help with emissions though because when easing off the throttle surely the fuel is cut off when on the overrun (as per the old gearbox set up), compared to still being supplied when idling (as per the new set up)?

only over about 1500-1800 rpm is the fuel cut off . depending on year and model of course

even if both vehicles have approximately the same hp around 180.. and the volvo has 2.4 compared to 2.0... the volvo is slower... but from what you guys are saying is normal for this gearbox. I can confirm lately i am driving in manual mode and it feels way faster...
