Default Fuel leak

Morning. My j reg 240 estate leaks fuel when filling up. It's fine once you've finished filling so is clearly the filler pipe or Join with tank. It's not great for grovelling around in the dirt at the moment but a quick inspection hasn't revealed the issue obviously. It looks a bit of a pig to get to. Wondering whether ill need to undo the rear shocks and let the axle down to get decent access. Has anyone here experienced this one?

The filler pipe fits into the tank just behind the rear wheel, driver side. Its a kind of 'knuckle joint' with a clip holding the pipe in place. These have rotted on a couple of my cars. They're dead simple and you do not have to drop the tank. Access is OK.
Another known leak is the pipes on the sender unit (top of tank) These are known to perforate. Check the filler first though. Ten minute job.

Best of luck

Scott

I have never experienced it myself, but I have heard several stories of the clamp holding the filler neck to the tank rusting out and creating a leak when filling.

Default Fuel leak on V70

Hi,

I have a similar problem.
After I have filled up and parked on my drive,on an incline, some diesel leaks from near the fill point. Initially I thought this was only when I had overfilled the tank, but this also occurs if I only partially fill up. After a day or so it stops leaking. Any help would be much appreciated.

Underneath. The only part of the tank you can access from inside is the top of the pump/sender unit.

Well, I've had it jacked up and taken the wheel off. Dammed if I can see where mine is leaking from. The ribbed pipe into the tank all seems fine and the metal fastener/clip feels solid too, but it's definatley the right area as all the underseal is dissolved off the tank at that point. Any thoughts??

Regards,

Dave A.

There is a vent pipe attached somewhere there - could be leaking at the attachment point?

Is this an estate or saloon? I remember when removing and refitting my tank once (estate) that access to the joiner clamp was from inside the boot after removing the floor and springy flap.

Yes, estate Clifford. I'll take the floor up and have a look, give me a chance to check the top of the sender pipes as well. I've not had any fuel smell inside though and I'm in and out of the rear storage regularly.......I'll report back.

Regards,

Dave A.
