240 saloon rear lights - does anyone know?
I need to replace the nearside rear light cluster on my 1990 saloon
When I spoke to the chap at Braydons he said that the design changed in 1990 so a 1989 or earlier wouldnt fit - different circuit board on the back and wiring etc. He said that we new cluster from Sweden would be £117+ and a new circuit board IRO £20. A 2+ week wait for both. I have ordered various parts from the 'Scandcar' website on the continent in the past and been impressed with their service...... Looking at their website I see the most recent light cluster is listed as 1985+ (at 109 Euros) http://classicvolvoparts.com/240260/...ort/3a/page/4/ Would I be right in thinking that this one wouldnt fit? Any ideas folks?

I saw this post after the one in the "Items wanted" section.
There are two configurations for the 6-piece tail-lamp assembly: early and late, but I'm not sure when they changed though I think it was in 1990. Early units have the two tail lamps adjacent, with the stop lamp above the inboard unit and the rear fog under the indicator; late ones have the two tail lamps on the lower tier and separated by either the stop or the rear fog lamp (I don't know which as I haven't seen a "late" 240 saloon for some time)

Here is a picture of mine
Braydons havent got back to me about the circuit board - I will chase them up tomorrow. That will be nearly 3 weeks driving about with only one tail light working - if the other one goes before I can get this sorted I will be in trouble. 'Thinks' - as an emergency measure I might stick a flat round rear bicycle LED light on the lens. Better than nothing I suppose. I find this most frustrating, but I guess that its what happens when models such as the 240 get to a certain age - some parts become problematic to get hold of. It wasnt too long ago that you could get things like this within a day or so........ In any event, going by Loki's description I have an earlier version 1986 - 1990 fitted as the stop light is above the rear light. In which case the light cluster shown at the bottom of the page in the Scandparts link posted in my first post should be the right one. Although my car is a 90 - perhaps it was produced just before the change?

Can we ask what the problem with the light is? If it's dodgy electrical connections on the back there have been some creative but neat solutions applied to this problem. Apparently parts of the circuit board can be carefully cut to make male tags that can be used with standard female connectors and short lengths of wire. Does this sound like it would work with yours?

My best guess is that the fault relates to a break in the circuit board. The earth for the light unit seems OK as does the wiring leading to it. All other lights apart from the rear tailight work OK. The rear bulb and holder is fine as it works alright when transferred to the other light cluster. My main concern is that the circuit board is old and if one bit has failed then removing it may hasten the demise of other bits - the whole thing is rather flimsy/fragile. Being as the plastic lenses are tired with some cracks etc I would be quite happy to replace the whole unit. If I could be sure as to which one to replace it with that is!

Thanks for the link thats really helpful
I entered my chassis number and ordered a new light unit - fingers crossed, it will fit It wont match the ones on there at the moment as they have chrome trim and all they have in stock is black. If it fits then I will buy a matching one for the right hand side

Maybe worthwhile? Remove the fog light bulbs and swap in the lower watt tail light ones. Use fog lights until you do the swap. That will keep you legal and safe. Personally I prefer the main rears to be out on the corners. Improves the visibility of the car from points ahead of centre from the side if you get what I mean. The light configuration of these tucks the rear lights inboard behind the car.

New unit arrived yesterday and I fitted it last night. This is a pattern part but good quality.
All the lights work - but some are in different places! There are two rear running lights - one in the usual place and one where the old fog light used to be. This is also the brake light. The fog light is now higher up. Anyway, it all works which is the main thing even if it offends my sense of symmet I have now ordered a matching right hand one so both sides will be the same once its fitted...........unless the layout is not the same of course, in which case the fun continues. Still, keeps me out of mischief I suppose
