Default Spring: What is it?

Was poking aroung under the car (trying to get a better view of fuel tank leak!) when I noticed that this small spring had rusted and snapped.
Is it just to hold the handbrake cables in position? Is it urgent to sort out? Can I replace it with a fat cable tie?

It is located directly above the rear diff.

Regards,

Dave A.

Yes, I think it's to support the handbrake cables, but still allow some movement as the axle moves through its suspension travel. Hence a spring is better, but if you use a cable tie, don't fit it too tight and work out whether the cables would be OK at full bump or full rebound positions.

What appears to be the axle breather probably isn't working with all of those kinks in it. A suitable replacement spring shouldn't be too hard to find.

Isn't that the speedo cable sheath with the kinks?

Yes, I think so. It's a wiring loom with the cable loosely fed down inside it.

The axle breather is on the left hand side of the axle tube, I think.

For what it's worth, I don't think it's essential. That spring got torn off my old GLT and I drove without it for at least 9 months without coming a cropper.
