Its quite hard to get a perfect seal there after so many years or corrosion. A bit of sealant should help.

I'd start by cleaning the recesses the 'stat and seal sit in in the housing and head to remove any corrosion/oxidisation there first Mark. Then smear the outside of the seal with some Vaseline or silicone grease (red rubber grease if you have neither of the other) and as you pop it back in, give the 'stat a twist back and forth to help the seal slide into the recess before refitting the housing.
Also a smear of copper grease on the threads will help, tighten them evenly too. That will almost certainly sort you out, even if it looks ok as it is. If not, some sealant (Hylomar, RTV silicone or similar sealant should do it) on one or both mating faces, give the housing a bit of a wiggle as you push it home to spread the sealant more evenly then tighten the nuts/bolts.

Hylomar is a very old established brand. Personally, as long as all mating surfaces have been cleaned up properly and using a merest smear of sealant I would never think of bothering about using a torque wrench to tighten up a termo housing. Bob
