ABS light
Received my snazzy new code reader today so I thought I would give it a go
All fuel and ignition codes ok as I thought ABS light is on and it gave me this code 1-5-2 Right front wheel sensor: open circuit or short-circuit to battery voltage Being a novice at this does it mean I need a new sensor ?

Before that it should do the normal on for about 5-6 seconds with the ignition then go out - if it stays on at that point then the sensor is open circuit. Rearranging those words, if the ABS light is behaving as it should, i would assume it's an old, uncleared fault. If your reader has the facility to clear the fault codes, use it, if not i think it's fuse #1 (like clearing the engine management ECU fault codes, pull it for 30-60 seconds and refit) to clear the memory then recheck with the reader. If all is good, take it for a drive and then check again. If all is still good, put the tester away and have your choice of beverage and forget about it. If it does prove to be the sensor, you're in for a lot of fun with a drill, blowtorch and die grinder - unless you're very, very, very lucky!

Hi Dave
The ABS light is on all the time. I've pulled fuse and it's still on

New sensor it is then Mark!
The old one is held in by a 10mm hex-headed bolt if memory serves and should, in theory, just pull out of the lower arm. Only had to do them on my last 740 but ended up drilling, blowtorching and then die-grinding the remains of the old ones out! Once out, i used the die-grinder to slightly enlarge then polish the hole to a mirror finish and generously smeared the body of the replacements with silicone grease before fitting. What happens is the holes in the lower arm corrodes and the rust crystals grow, crushing the sensor. By enlarging the hole and mirror polishing it, then packing round the sensor with waterproof grease, it minimises the chance of the same happening again. Despite the fact the same sensor (albeit with different plugs) is used on the Mk3 Cavalier on the front and the Rover 800 range on the rear, they still ain't cheap! Cheapest on Rock Auto is £141, not sure about other sources as yet but if you can find good secondhand ones that have come out intact, that would be the way i'd go.
