Default Plug in boot under carpet

Hi, does anyone know what this unused plug is for? Under boot carpet on left hand side. The electrical tape suggests this is not how it left the factory??

Has the car previously had a tow bar fitted?

No towbar ever fitted from what I can tell. Could it be for that?

It was just a suggestion, I couldn’t think of anything else it might be, sorry. But is there any power to it - either permanent live or ignition controlled? Can you follow/trace it back to where it’s connected, that might give a clue?

I’m as intrigued as you are now...

It's a factory fitted towbar wiring connector. When fitting a towbar it's extended from this point.

Good to know as I might get a towbar fitted at some point. Thank you!
