Default Advice, New to Volvo looking to buy mid to late 90's V70 V80

.. Hello all,
I'm new to the Volvo scene and am making this posting as much for advice as to hopefully, eventually find the right second hand vehicle.I'm based in Altrincham, south Manchester.

We basically need a second motor. Like most people I'm hoping to find a Volvo with good mileage, full service history, mot & tax and preferably one previous owner. The Volvo has always caught my imagination and eye as a good, sound and practical vehicle. I've narrowed my options to a mid to late 90's estate either V70 or V80. Either petrol or diesel ( although I feel a diesel may prove more expensive to buy and harder to come buy) ? ..Generally though, the mid to late 90's V70 and V 80 look to fit my budget and needs ?

Not being particularly mechanical, it's all looking a bit like a plate of spaghetti, so I'd like to ask a few questions in the hope someone has the patience to answer a few questions. Any tips and other input would also be welcome.

What engine sizes do they come in ?

Which ,out of the range available over this period, is the better model ?

Economy, are they gas guzzlers ?

General maintenance, expensive ?

General price range ?

Hi,

V70 Comes in petrol and diesel, diesel will be more efficient on fuel.
A big car though so don't expect that much on the economy front.
25-40 or there abouts..

V80 - no such car. There is the S80 a saloon.
Also available diesel and petrol. But I suspect you are after the estate.?

Some technical info that may be useful:
Linky....

Having a general look through the 70 technical forum may help too, to give an idea of what to look for..

A search on Autotrader should give you a good range of price. Do a national search to get a better spread of cars...

Welcome to the forums and enjoy your time here...

Des. . .

V80? I think you mean the 850 Estate.

The V70 2.5Tdi models tend to give very good economy, but I think the 2.4T model is the most popular on balance across the 70 series range.

Economy, I would advise to go for a turbo model as you wont have to press on as hard compared to the naturally aspirated models, but why not drive a few and see what you think of both. (My C70 T5 is one of most economical cars I have ever had, I am still gobsmacked).

As for what to look for regarding specific issues, I will let the more tehnically mided answer that, but ensure the aircon system works properly and that worn suspension components don't cause the car to feel vague or wander.

If you are looking at an 850 or a V70 I try and go for the 170 bhp model over the 140 bhp model if you intend to use it fully loaded.
The more powerful version is no worse on the fuel.
