Question 440 with 'lumpy' engine

Re: 96, 440 1.8 petrol injection, B18U engine, manual drive.

Hello members. Can anybody provide advice for a long term problem (Eight months since purchasing the car).
The engine feels lumpy. It starts fine, idles at 1,000 and revs well. I have changed the spark plugs, HT leads, distributor cap, coil, thermostat, and fuel filter.
I notice the water temperature gauge does not function, could that really be the problem??
Thanking you in advance. Colin.

hi Collin, when does it feel lumpy ? on idle, when accelerating, when cruising on light throttle?

has the rotor arm been replaced ?

also occasionally the inlet manifold gasket can leak, causing air leak and lumpy idle and cruising.

Hi,
Thank you for your quick response. The problem arises when cruising and light throttle. It just does not feel right. On a couple of occassions when pulling away from traffis lights I had to pump the throttle to get moving.
I replaced the rotor arm, or at least, what was left of it. I could'nt believe the state of the terminal/posts in the distributor cap, they hardly existed.
Cheers,
Colin.

i am new in this forum but i have same problem with water temperature gauge, for long period of time
it works only in winter or in cold weather such as above 0 degrees C
also i have problem with engine
oil consuption is too high
he wastes about 2l of oil in 1000km and there are no leaks at all
253000 km might be the heart of the problem and i know that engine needs general repairs
how can i find all needed parts for that?
i am asking that coz i live in serbia and we have less than a few volvo dealers and volvo mechanics, not to mention prices
thanks

Your water temp. gauge might only work in cold weather because the water temp sensor is faulty. Does the fan work in hot weather though?
Have a look at the oil on the dipstick and see whether it looks like there's coolant in it or if its discoloured in some way (not your usual colour of oil.)
If it's using that much oil then you'd probably be leaving a trail of smoke behind you. Check if the smoke is a bit bluish and smells of burnt oil (like a two stroke), or check the sump ventilation pipe with a running engine and if it smokes like a kettle then the engine's pretty much had it.
If your local auto parts store doesn't sell parts to the 400 series, then you'll probably just have the Volvo dealer left. They are expensive though. Or check on the forum or internet for volvo parts (usually located in Germany, Sweden, UK.) Also check the scrapyards of any 400 series parts.

Same deal with my 440 - the temp. gauge goes up a little after being in traffic for ages, then the fan sometimes kicks in with the needle only 1/4 the way up! The fuel gauge never worked ( have been driving on the orange light for 8 years now! )

I would be careful not to confuse the fact that the 440 is ( my opinion anyway ) a type of agricultural machine, especially in traffic. Smooth they are not! I thought it was just mine, but a friend who had a 460 new in 1994 told me his was the very same from day one.

Regards,

Tony

try checking the codes to see if its the oxygen sensor, mie was lumpy, and it always started a couple of miles into a trip, changed the oxygen sensor on the exhaust and it was smooth again.
also check the oxy sensor heating circuit is getting power, if the fuse blows it gives the same type of symptoms, the fuse is up under the dashboard.
