Tow bar fitting
Hi
Looking to get a second hand tow bar for my 54 plate xc90 d5 Is there multiple ways to connect the tow bar to the vehicle? When searching, I find different looking towbars, with different shaped connecting plates. Some bolting to vehicle horizontally some vertically. All different age ranges but including mine. Can anyone shed some light? Also, which style or make do I need to not need to cut any of the bumper to fit, as there’s a specific cut outlined for the original I think, but read somewhere that it’s not always necessary if you buy the right one. Don’t get me started on the electric options…. No module needed, module needed, splice with relay. I didn’t expect it to be this complicated 😂😂 |

It think all options require a bumper cut, so when looking at used tow bars I would check you can still download the manual which will tell you exactly how to cut the bumper, it’s not usually difficult.
With regard to electrics you can splice into the loom but you must use a bypass relay to avoid potentially damaging the cars electric and bulb failure messages. If you have a look around you can usually get car specific kits with wiring already cut to the right length etc. However the best option by far is the Volvo trailer module, plugs straight in with no wiring modification and will disable the parking sensor and car fog light when you have a trailer attach, and also includes the trailer in bulb monitoring. You may need a software update though, not sure on the early xc90. These cars are neither cheap or simple……
