AWD Transmission: - Xc90 awd issue please help

Hi everyone..

After some advice, I recently purchased a XC90 D5 163.

I brought it to pull my boat however discovered yesterday that only the front wheels are driving, and had to be towed off the slip ramp to my embarrassment 😳.

I'm wondering if this could be a common fault with these cars as the prop shaft is still attached? If so is there any advice people could give me to get the rear wheels active again.

Hi, yes this is a very common problem on early XC90. The culprit is the spline drive will be stripped. This component takes the output of the gearbox and connects to a transfer box to drive the rear wheels. (Ask me how I know!)

On early models this drive used to strip and the replacement part is updated to hopefully prevent this problem

To confirm what John rightly suspects, lie down on floor at drivers side and reach towards middle of floorpan where you will feel propshaft. Try twisting it. If it can be rotated the spline gear needs replacing.
