I owned a T5 for 12 yrs. Only things engine-wise to require attention and known to be an issue are/were:
1. Fuel Pressure Regulator - has a tendency to go and cause a slight misfire and engine management light. Not terrifically expensive to fix at about £200 although I managed to get it done for free as they were a recall item in Scandinavia. Volvo UK did it for free as goodwill. 2. Oil breather housing - needs replacement when blocks and makes a high pitch squealing. IIRC cost about £320 to fix. Bar that the engine was pretty bomb-proof.

I've daily driven mine for 11.5 years
Problems I've had specific to the engine: Oil Breather Diaphragm (breather leakage) - I bet all T5's have had this unit replaced by now. Atmospheric Pressure Sensor - this sensor is behind the Fog Light on the Intercooler Hose and wasn't reading properly....affecting performance (but no check engine light). I have changed the Fuel Pressure Sensor (FPS) and the Turbo Control Valve (TCV) but only for good maintenance sake. Other than the above it has been faultless, always starts first time, always sounds the same, still pulls like a train. For maintenance; change the oil regularly and change the spark plugs every 2-3 years or 20-30K miles - probably too soon but it'll reduce stress on the coil packs and ensure good combustion. I've also only ever used Super Unleaded.

Forgot about that, yes, completely agree. Only fuel it with super unleaded as recommended by Volvo. It never ran as well on the very occasional tank of 95 RON.
