Smile Troublesome start ups and noises

Hello everyone, I'm the to this forum.

I have a Volvo S40 2006 1.8 with just over 70k miles on the clock and I have a couple of "issues" with the car.

1. Sometimes it takes 2-3 tries to start up the engine. In such situations the engine seems to "choke", the RPMs are around 300-500 and the car shakes a lot. The battery is new, I replaced it back in April. Not sure about the spark plugs - I serviced the car back in November and I've been told that spark plugs were okay at that point. I bought the car only last year (it's my first car in fact) so I have no idea when these have been changed for the last time. Any idea what's causing all these things?

2. Noise problem. Often I get a hissing noise coming from the front of the car, however I cannot locate the exact source of it. Air intake or timing belts, perhaps? Also - sometimes it does sound like a clunky diesel. Any ideas?

3. Often when I change gears (especially 1-3) or go to reverse, the car does a metallic clicking noise from the underneath. Once again, any idea what it possibly could be?

4. Final question - could you please recommend a good honest mechanic in Manchester area for the upcoming service and possible repairs on the things above?

Thanks
