They carried out recall '29948' which was updated software and cleaning of EMAP and TMAP (sensors?). They scanned the DTCs and found fault P200900 for the intake manifold. They replaced the manifold and carried out a compression test which the car passed. They also checked the valve sealing and replaced the fuel pipe. There's another item on the invoice which said ECM EGR Rebuild AP which I'm less certain about.

All costs were covered by Volvo themselves, the car was cleaned and I got a tin of complimentary mints, so all in all, I am reasonably satisfied assuming this 'final fix' is the real deal this time!
But surely that one isn't the safety recall for the deforming/fire ridk manifold, which is R29939?

Not sure about that Zebster, the recall that I had: 29948, apparently this came out in January this year, at least that's what I'm seeing around online. Could be something to do with my V60 being a 2014 D4 model, not 2015> In the document Clan attached, it does state that 29948 it is for deforming/intake manifold fire risk.

I remember checking the Gov website before Christmas and there was nothing there, it appeared in January so I got it booked in.

It's very confusing! Last week when I booked a service (which is happening on Monday) they told me the recall was just an ECM software update. What a mess...

I agree it continues to be quite confusing. If it helps, I've found a website which shows how the different year groups attract different codes, but for the same problem. It's for the V40 on this link, but it's the same engine in question.

Default Software update for safety recall and Polestar optimisation

I received my letter today for the inlet manifold safety recall which states some new hoses will need to be fitted as well as a software update.

Does anyone actually know what the software update is ?
Will it affect MPG or performance of the car at all ?
I have the Polestar optimisation pack fitted to my XC60 and and want to make sure it wont decrease performance after I have paid a lot to have it increased !

I have a 2016 XC60 D4 with approx 52k miles on it. No engine issues at all (fingers crossed!)

Polestar is a volvo approved map so no worries there , see if you can tell us what the recalll involves , is it the one you had a letter about last spring?

Thanks for reply Clan. I have only had the car a few months so don't know what letter was sent out last spring.

The email I received today is as follows :

IMPORTANT - VEHICLE SAFETY NOTIFICATION

Earlier this year Volvo's quality follow-up procedures identified a potential safety concern on a limited number of Volvos (model year 2014 to 2019) equipped with four cylinder diesel engines. Volvo wrote to all affected customers advising them of the concern and the actions that should be taken in the short term, and that contact would be made again when a solution is available.

What was the issue?
At the time Volvo identified that, in very rare cases, the engine’s plastic inlet manifold may melt and deform. In a worst case scenario this may cause a localised engine bay fire to develop.

Therefore, owners were informed to check for any unusual engine operation, including, but not limited to, the engine management light being lit, an engine interruption, or lack of power. In the event of an unusual smell, customers were advised to stop safely and contact Volvo Assistance or a recovery agent.

What we have done?
Volvo has completed their investigations, working with the appropriate authorities, and has concluded that your Volvo will require a software upgrade to the Engine Control Module, and fitment of additional hoses to re-route the cooling system of the exhaust gas recirculation system.

The outstanding recall on mine was looked at yesterday while my car was in for service #6. Because I was NOT reporting any of the described warning signs outlined in the original recall notification (burning smells, warning lights, poor performance) all I got was an ECM update and my intake manifold was inspected externally to check for any deformation. That was it!

I have a service coming up shortly at approx 108K. Just wondering if the change of intake manifold might be a positive thing to get done. If so I might start smelling a bit of burning on occasions and noticing bit of reduced performance
