Hi
I've recently noticed a speed related whine on my 04xc90 but unsure where from as my hearing is as bad as uk roads! Thing is I've had what I consider gearbox 'issues' for 12 months but since the whine they have improved slightly. Having never had an xc90 before I've no gearbox performance benchmark

Could be the tyres - cheaper to fix first.

Thought i'd res-erect this thread! I have a drone, starts at 30mph continues to 50mph and disappears. Had it since we got the car, done 10k miles and it's not got any worse.

I asked the garage to check the wheel bearings and all fine, i've done to splined sleeve etc and made no difference.

It only does it under load so coasting along at 40mph it's present, lift off and it disappears, no difference when cornering.

I think it's a gearbox bearing but didn't know if anyone else had any input or updates?

I've had the same symptoms on my 2005 XC90 for the last 65k. I think it may be in the gearbox/bevel gear or the RH driveshaft support bearing. It hasn't got worse and has no other effect.

Monitor it and turn up the stereo a bit!

I was the original poster and 5+ years on and about 30k miles extra the sound has never got any worse, as such I've never been inclined to expend much effort trying to fix it.

Hi, had similar, 30mph to 50mph whine. Ended up changing both rear wheel bearings. It was the passenger side bearing that was gone. There was no way of detecting it until I had it off the car and then you could feel the roughness. I really thought it was the final drive gear, it was exactly that sound but much easier in the end.

Hmm... I have had a similar noise on mine since I got it, 45,000 miles ago. It's not gotten any worse, but it is annoying...
