Default Dodgy oil sensor?

Hi I'm new on here so pls be patient. Our 68 plate v40 d3 with 45k on the clock, told us that an oil service was required, and on checking noticed that the oil level was too high. We went to our local volvo dealership for the service, all seemed good, untilmy wife set off to work the next day and the message was back, oil service required, and the level was once again too high. The notes we recieved from the service stated that 5.2 litres of oil had been used, which I believe is correct. However I removed 1/2 litre of oil, but still the same message. I also noticed the new oil, with less that 100 miles usage, was black! We contacted the dealer, but were told it would need diagnostics £145 per hour. Ouch! Any ideas would be helpful, thanks

Oil will go black in a diesel engine relatively quickly. That's nothing to be concerned about. Petrol engines are different to diesel.

I don't think Volvo reset the oil level gauge properly, hence why you're getting errors. If you had an oil level high message and they did a service and didn't reset the gauge, you'll still get that message.

I have read somewhere that the oil level will reset itself, you just need to drive the car long enough (at least 20 miles continuous journey, not start stopping). Then when the gauge resets and the message disappears, check what the oil level is inside the car says as there's no physical dipstick and see what it says (top up as necessary). Just make sure you don't overfill it, i.e. engine holds no more than 5.2 litres max). Make sure the car is on level ground when you check the oil level.

I imagine if you took 0.5 litres out, when the gauge resets itself properly, you'll probably have to add the same back into the engine for it to read properly.

Save yourself £145 diagnostic fee and see does it reset itself. Like I said earlier, you need to do a long enough continuous journey.
