It could just be that it's one of their "loss leaders" where they price something super low someone[such as the op]goes shopping spots it buys it and spreads the word about the price[as is the case here]so others who don't normally shop there go to buy some[whether engine oil, soap powder or whatever]and thinks well while I'm here I might as well get some other shopping in and possibly the shop/supermarket gains another long term customer.

By that logic, a free barrel of waste beef dripping must also be acceptable. Oil is oil after all...... Apparently.
While I see your logic, it is a little flawed, 5w30 fully synthetic and the specs it meets (which seem ok) is going to be at least as good as say 10w40 semi from someone like Castrol isn't it.

I'm thinking that this could be a possibility, as if you look at Asda online the 2l bottles of the same oil show as £19, there was another 5w30 5l bottle priced at £2 in store but they'd predictably all gone.

The oil you've bought is C3 spec though and I very much doubt that your engine requires C3.
What is the required oil spec in the owner's manual?

Car doesn't have a manual but online info states A3/B3/B4 SAE 5W-40, and C3 appears to be an equivalent so far as I can make out so all good.
