Tyre-Weld, Run Flat Tyres and TPMS
I recently had a puncture on my 2004 S60 bi-fuel so, having no spare tyre, out came the can of tyre-weld. Unfortunately the damage to the tyre was quite bad so the tyre-weld didn’t really do the job, but was sufficient to limp down the road to a petrol station. With another can of tyre-weld and the use of the garage’s airline I was able to get the tyre inflated well enough to get me to a tyre fitter. As a result I now carry a compressor in addition to the tyre-weld. Was wondering if anyone else has had to use this product and with what success.
This also got me thinking about fitting run-flat tyres. These need to be used in conjunction with a Tyre Pressure Monitoring System (TPMS) so you know if you’ve got a flat. Does anyone know what’s involved in retro-fitting TPMS (I’m assuming the car doesn’t have it already) and how feasible/expensive this is? |

to be honest, i'd rather carry the tyre weld and a compressor.
IMHO the ride in my V70 is bad enough as it is, without making it worse courtesy of run flats. i already avoid extra load tyres at all costs, as for a TPMS system, sure you could buy one from hellfrauds etc, but its just another tacky looking display to wedge in the dash somewhere |

i have only purchased 1 new tyre for my V70 in 126k miles and use second hand ones at £20 each recently increased in price to £24 , the last pair I had on the rear were Bridgestone 225/45 17 runflats which the trader said are fitted as standard to Subaru boy racer cars ( as if that would make me feel good about them ) . Luckily didnt get a puncture and they lasted 28k miles which is a record for me , I didnt have pressure sensors fitted . I didnt notice much difference in road noise or ride when I changed them to Michelins . The only time I have had bad experiences with tyres are with a brand called something like Wanlin and even I could tell they were a bad idea and was glad when they were worn out after about 7k miles .

Yep, it's a bind that we can't carry a full spare wheel in the "well".....
I carry 2 compressors, and 2 cars of weld, and a spare TYRE. The tyre has 2 uses, the obvious one and putting take-out meals within! I am awaiting a "spare" set of wheels, purchased on this forum, and will then carry a wheel with tyre around with me. The thought of being stranded in Tromso or Balham (sorry Peter Sellers ) effectively without a usable spare outweighs the weight penalty. Bhowani V70 LPG |

I had read that issues with ride comfort have supposedly been sorted on run-flats but good to get an unbiased opinion. Also found some TPMS systems for about £150 (better than I was expecting) and fitting seems to be quite straight forward. Might go down that route when I need new tyres. As Mr P says you just need to find somewhere to cram the display monitor into.
