Smile 1994 850 t5-r saloon auto 100k on clock....How much?

seen a t5-r 850 in the local paper and need a car to get me to work and back and has a bit of punt to it.....Obviously on paper the t5-r appears to meet that rather nicely...

Just wondering what are the caveats in buying such a performance volvo, its got a full history....

Is there anything in that history i should check that has been done? Any belts that need changing etc etc?

Its done 101k miles, any issues i should be aware of?

Any independant volvo specialists in herts that can inspect it for me? Or will one of the well known inspection companies pick up most of the issues?

And finally, how much should i pay? Its just over a couple of grand...

Thanks in advance, hopefully i can become a fully fledged member of the club if this deal stacks up, thus your advice is appreciated...

hi mate, cam belt at 80k, be very careful of the rear main oil seal (crank) £££
will be evident by an oil leak on pass side, middle of engine.
boost should be a little over 3 quaters into the white on the gauge on that model (ill be corrected if not, a T5 is around 3 quaters and the T5-R runs slightly more boost)

dont worry about an oil leak that looks as if its coming from the turbo, this is genrally the turbo oil return pipe gasket. this will trickle oil dowm the back of the engine. £3.00 gasket and under an hour to replace.

theres tuns of stuff to look at, just like any motor.

they are a true limited edition, so be sure its what it is meant to be. lots of people turn T5's into T5-R lookalikes.

£2k is realistic for a half decent T5-R on a 94 in my opinion.

if your not confident about spotting a lemon..... seek experienced help mate.

Check the following:-

1. - Rear Main Seal (Between Gbox and Engine) - £350 - £700 fix if its leaking.

2. - The colour of the autobox fluid, it should be red or a light brown. If its caked and black I would walk away, having the autobox reconditioned will set you back £1200ish.

3. - Cambelt is at 80k as mentioned. Make sure this has been done.

4. - Try to get something with a long MOT or get the seller to put it through an MOT and say you'll pay the test fee if it passes. If he doesn't want to put it through the MOT he's probably hiding something.

5. - Check oil in coolant / coolant in oil. Mayo on bottom of dipstik and or underneath fuel filler cap.

I think someone wrote an article about what to look out for with the 850 T5's. The T5R is just a special edition of the T5 and is mechanically identical.

Also be aware of any leak from the heater matrix.
This is evident by possible dampness in the passenger side footwell and the windows misting up when the heater blower is used, its a common fault with older 850 cars.
Also check that the aircon (if fitted )works as it should, as it can be very expensive to fix.
