Might not be relevant on your car but if you're replacing the rack it might be worth noting that the steering limiters (fitted on those cars with 8J wheels) are on the steering rack itself, not as "bump stops" on the hub as on P2 cars. They are essentially just a plastic collar.

Also, if you're re-using your existing gaiters you will probably need jubilee clips to hold the inner end of the gaiter in place.

By way of closing the loop, steering rack replaced today. Noise still present...

After more rooting around, went back to top of struts and it turns out that the nut on the top of the shock had about 5 turns left on it!

When I did the rebuild a couple of weeks back, both struts were mated with the spring and shock mounts on the bench and torqued with a torque wrench. I can only assume that the mount was caught up on the shoulder of the strut when I assembled it. Just so annoying that the sound just so happened to be on the LHS still and sounded almost exactly the same as the original rattle, which I can only assume now was the original shock mount or strut.

Anyway, pride and wallet properly dented, hopefully the car is kind to me for a while now. The front end should be good, it's pretty much like new now.

It's a pitty you never spotted that the nut wasn't seating earlier but it happens. As you say it's all good now and should last a few years. When you changed the rack did you change the power steering pipes? They are known to spall off small particles of metal causing damage to the system and blocking the filter.

Feel for you big time. You wont be the first, you wont be the last. We have all been there chasing a knock or rattle(not the wife) which turns out something simple.

Hope you have lots of fun with the car before any more problems

Good Luck

Thanks.

Pipes not replaced although I may wish I had. However, I have put a 3/8” in line filter on the return and it has had two thorough flushes with Pentosin CHF (cost me a small fortune). The filter has an inspection window and washable element so I can keep an eye on things.

Feels like a new car now...
