I use a plastic disc from TomTom, fixes to the dash. The windscreen mount fits to that as well as the screen. Just a few pounds for two. Makes it easier to reach from the drivers seat as well.

Thanks all for the advice - I guess the takeaway is that the Garmin is ok, integrates well, but is overpriced.

The appeal of the Garmin is that the power wires are hidden and all I have to do is slot the unit in - I hate having the wire trailing down the centre to the power socket as with my current system. Are there any aftermarket solutions which will connect in the same way as the the Garmin (i.e. nicely integrated) for power purposes?

The big issue for me with other sat nav's is that only TomTom have HD Traffic and that is the killer application. It saves me so much time being bored sitting in traffic.

You could hard wire any sat-nav in so no trailing wires, not difficult, buy a 12v accessory socket and connect it to a positive feed (back of cigarette socket I hv used in past) and other cable to earth, route cable behind dash to mounting bracket and away you go. Halfords offer this very service if you do not want to do it yourself (so I guess do most auto electric dealers). Garmin make a mount which could be screwed to the central grille on the XC90 (same grille as my Volvo Garmin fixed to) look on their web site at part 010-10747-02 (hv seen in Halfords too) and how about a Garmin 5'' wide 1490 TV to go with it so you can also watch TV when stationary - cost £289.99 on Garmin web site and inc Trafficmaster traffic alerts (part no. 010-00842-30).
Your summary of Volvo Garmin kit is bang on, nice, neat and works well enough but expensive.

Hi Roy,
Do you have any pictures of your mounting setup?
Thanks,
Tom

Here it is. You could stick the disc on the speaker grill and take the wire down through the disc and permantly wire it in if you wanted to. The wire is less noticable in reality than it is in the photo though. At my head hight the top of the TomTom is about in line with the windscreen wipers.

looks good, but would Halfords be able to wire the cable through the dash without too much mess and how stable is the base - my current satnav rocks a lot

Well mine is rock solid. I have a GO 740 LIVE.

As to Halfords I've not been that impressed myself and wouldn't let them touch my car. I'd go to a specialist like elliot 2 in the sales section.
