Cam belt snapped, any pointers ?
Hi Guys, Cam belt has snapped luckily only 200 yards from home and at very low speed, fingers crossed for the valves. Tensioner and belt just about to be ordered, any hints and tips for me before I start the job ?? When setting the timing marks up should I turn the crank or the camshaft first to avoid valves touching pistons ??
Many thanks, Don. Last edited by besidetheseaside; Mar 4th, 2019 at 15:01. |

My ball made of glass is in maintenance.
I'm able to imagine the kind of engine that's in your car. Waaaaaaaaaaay better would be to KNOW the kind of engine and car! Should be sooooo simple Could be sooooo simple The question and the answer Good luck, Kay |

That's not an interference engine is it?

As far as i'm aware, that's a non-interference engine.
Assuming the timing marks on the crank pulley are accurate, set the crank to about 90BTDC so the pistons are all halfway down the bores then set the cam to TDC on #1, verified by the cams being on the heels on #1 cylinder, the cam lobes if you look from the front will form a "V" shape with the lobes uppermost. Now bring the crank pulley to the timing marks/TDC and fit your belt, tensioning as per instructions. It's a long time since i did a belt on a red block so can't remember the tensioning procedure, sorry, but once tensioned, remove the plugs and turn the engine over using a spanner or socket on the crank pulley, making sure the valves are opening and closing and no "tight" spots. If all is good, recheck the belt tension, refit the plugs and start it up.

There is a special tool to block the crank while untighten and tighten the central screw on the crank. Think about to renew the three seals: crank-, intermediate- and camshaft

+ 1 on the seals. They aren't expensive and while you are there well worth doing
