Hello I am new here
Any advice would be a help. Our '85 360 carb 2ltr has just gone away after 22yrs with us. last summer my lady desired a better caravan putting the weight near to 1200 max (1160kg swift) (as the 360 weighed 1060kg). We have had next to no trouble in our 130.000 miles but spent a lot on bodywork in '06 and £250 on mot in jan .The main problem to cap it all was we had a very hard time finding 98 octane fuel in rural yorkshire last summer and we decided to move on . There seems to be some good cars at a modest price ,ie for 1999/2000 cars even some cheaper 245 /740 tidy models. what year did Volvo go over to unleaded ? are the engines similar to my 360 ? what can you reccomend
2.4/5 ltrs? ,many thanks , Alan in Maidstone |

Hi,and welcome to the forums.
I'll start by saying that i have little knowledge of the 300 series and there similarity to other volvos, but you cant go far wrong with a 200/700/900 as a tow car. I have a 1988 740 2.0l and 1993 240 2.0l. both injected I think you will find any fuel injected model will take unleaded which takes you back to 1986/87 approx.I think carb models can too with some timing adjustment. The 2.0l engine is ok for towing but i would recommend a 2.3 for the extra torque provided with the larger engine. you also have the 940 turbo as the ultimate RWD towing volvo. All of these cars are available for very little money good luck radiomark |

Not forgetting the turbo-intercooled diesel engined versions of this car, which have more torque with which to tow a caravan. When towing my 1 ton caravan I have a very hard job to keep DOWN to 60mph on motorways.
All the best, Peter. |
