intercooler
hi all,
just had the codes read on my 54 D5 auto following three 'engine service required' faults in the last four weeks, accompanied with limp mode for approx 1 minute. Faulty intercooler diagnosed as it is seeping small amount of oil.( faults to do with boost pressure) I am rather skeptical as this seepage has been present for the last 12 months and fault code has only been posted in the last month.Anyone got a view before I spend £500 on a new intercooler? ps am I right to assume the intercooler is the rad type thing in front of the actual radiator? lesk |

Only the bottom edge of the intercooler can be seen from the front as it goes ac condenser, intercooler and then rad (front to back). Have a search on here as a repair on the intercooler has been done and the poster also talked about there fault codes.

I think the intercooler must be absolutely bust, only then it can cause an error code. Mine didn´t hold air and was oily and I drove with it a whole year with no significant power loss and no error codes.
However if its oily it wouldn´t hurt to change it. On e-bay you can by it for much less than 500, I would say for 150 and the quality is ok. The swap is also duable itself, there are some instructions when you look on the net. And yes, the intercooler is the rad like thing between the coolant radiator and AC radiator/condenser.

Hi,
I had mine (Jan06 55reg) changed about 4 months ago via indy Volvo specialist (Swindon Volvo, Shrivenham); I can't recall the exact costs (part & labour) but it was a dam sight cheaper than official Volvo dealer... I initially noticed that there was an oily residue in the area of the radiators (blown through front and running to the bottom) this was verified by having someone 'rev' the engine whilst I listened at the radiators; the significant 'wooshing' noise of the escaping air was the confirmation that all was not well. I did not notice a drop in power, but then it was probably gradual over several weeks as the split widened; but defiantly noticed the change (power improvement) with the fault fixed! |
