Default 7 years in storage- 360 glt

Hi Im new to the forum,
I put my 1989 360 GLT in barn storage 7 years ago, due to the failure of my Musso Im thinking of bringing the old girl back out,

1st problem- just before I put it in storage I changed the front offside shock,
the first one I was sent was wrong so the car ended up
sitting with the front offside raised for a week, when I dropped
it back down the dash had sperated a little, the sunroof leaks,
and when on lock the steering makes a cracking noise,Ive been
told this is just the springs moving, my question is is the chassis
twisted?

2nd problem-do I just attach the new battery and start it, or does it require
other things , ie oil change,wd40 etc?

Thanks for any help
Jason

7 yrs!!! Bloody hell!! Couple of things to consider first before you start it up.
1,Did it have water in or antifreeze when layed up and is there a chance that it could have frozen in this time?
2 Obviously check the oil etc, but first off ,try to turn the engine by hand to check it hasnt seized. If its free to turn then your half way there!
3 Get a good fully charged battery ( and a spare if possible ) , take out the plugs and give it a crank over. if it spins freely on the starter, then put the plugs back in and cross you fingers! Hopefully it will start , however the petrol may have deteriorated over the years so have a gallon or so to hand.
Hopefully you will get it running but then there a other things to consider, ie is the clutch stuck, handbrake stuck on, brakes rusted or cylinders perished , the list goes on and on. Good luck with it anyway!!

Hi mate.
My 360glt had been laid up for almost 10 years before i bought it. The engine will probably be ok as they are bullit proof. The creeky stearing is probably just the power stearing hasn't been used in a while.
Cheers Mark.

Default Twisted chassis

Thanks for the fast response lads, any ideas about the twisting of the chassis, as this is my main worry, carrying my kids in the car etc, do you think its twisted now, or just while it was raised at the corner, why is the sunroof leaking, sorry for all the questions but Im pretty clueless, its only done 58000 miles and was my mums before me!

cheers for any help

provided you jacked it and supported it in all the right places so that nothing collapsed, then you won't have twisted the chassis, at least I'd be very surprised if you had managed to.

I can't explain why the dash had moved, but the springs creaking are signs of a bad bearing in the top mounts of the front suspension struts. The sunroof leaks because basically most of them do.....it was not a good design even when fairly new and working properly, and now with time and age, even worse, I'm afraid. You might still be able to get a new seal to fit round it to see if that helps. Also if it still works properly, then slide it all the way back and clear out any rubbish from the drainage channels down the side.

As for starting up after so long...change all the fluids in the engine, oil, water, brake fluid, and at least check that the gearbox and rear diff oil are up to level. Get a large bar and manually crank the engine over gently to see that its not seized. If it cranks over fine...take the plugs out and put a little engine oil down each bore, and then pull the fuel pump fuse and crank the engine over on the starter motor for a few seconds. Then replace plugs and start gently. If it doesn't turn over with moderate force, then you take the plugs out and you put a good slug of diesel into the bores and leave it for a week or so...that should hopefully percolate through the rust and it should unseize without having to resort to huge amounts of force, run the starter over to flush all the diesel out and then replace plugs etc....

Default Sorry, 9 years!

Hi Chaps,
Just to let every one know, I went to the barn today, first time in 9 years, not seven as I thought, the cover was still on, on the cover was 20kg of guano, I would have liked to cover all of suggestions, changing all fluids etc, but unfortunately, I have little money and few tools, so I went down the gallon of petrol and new battery route, turned over 3 times and started, let it run for 45 mins, theres a slight judder on tickover, also revs seem too low at 600, but it was like that when I put it in, also although I didn t move it today I seem to remember that under acceleration, it has a slight stutter!
Any way inside is a little dusty, apart from that it is pretty much as new inside, heated seats dont work though, but didnt before, I have 2 small rust spots on the sunroof, also 2 on the front of the bonnet, thats it, wings, body, sills all seem perfect, still has the supplying dealer sill protection stickers on, put new discs and pads on, and new exhaust before I stored it.
In the service book it had full Volvo history until 48000 including cambelt at 48k, is it normal to change a cambelt at 48k?
mileage now showing 63326, the brakes are ceased on and it wont budge.

Anyway sorry for going on, just thought Id share it with the forum, Im just a little excited thats all, Im 32 so thats all wrong!!!!!!!!!

Are us chaps in dresses allowed to reply, lol? Thats brilliant, another stood up Volvo started first time on here recently, seem to remember that was a 2 series. Don't know what your cambelt change intervals are but 50 thou sounds feasible. I was wondering something the other day that ties up with your 360 and that is deterioration of cambelts in terms of time as oppose to mileage with regard to vehicles being stood up, I bought some rubber seals off the shelf at Mercedes for my camper and they had deteriorated due to the length of time they had sat on the shelf. Exciting news about the car whatever age we are!

As laneystrider says that cambelt will be fairly perished after 9 yrs, I would get it changed asap.

Default cambelt!

Hi,
I agree about the cambelt, most manufacturers say 60000 miles or 5 years, I have a couple of new cambelts in the boot from before, can I fit one myself or is it a mechanic job?
