Fixed...

Is a car length over 400m worth 10+mpg? This is where the fuel injection setup on the GLTs let them down. The more modern system fitted to 940s would allow you go get GLE economy (or at least close to...) with a 2.3 engine fitted which would spank the GLT. Of course we're now getting into the realms of fantasy for most people...

cheers

James

Well I agree.. but that's a bit of a generalisation, a variation of 10mpg between the GLE vs GLT only occurs on long runs, they're far closer in day to day driving in terms of economy, particularly from cold starts.

But the thing that really bugs me is the massive hole between 2nd and 3rd gear bought on by the taller diff, it's very, very noticable on my GLS too - the GLT is far better for this.

I suspect your GLS has a 3.28:1 diff, making it even worse than a normal carb model. Mine wasn't soooo terrible. It wasn't good, but you could live with it. I find the short 5th gear on the GLT more annoying.

If you go too far the other way, 3rd is great, but 2nd is too short. I reckon you could lock the wheels on my 343 (B200 swap with an M47 and a 3.82:1 from a 1.4 5 speed) with a sharp enough down-shift. Worked nicely for accelleration though...I didn't time it, but based on 'encounters' with cars with known figures (and FWD!), I reckon I might just sneak a 0-60 time in the 7s.

cheers

James

Neither quite One of Foggy's never finished projects is an ex 1.4 that now has a 2.0L with R Sport twin carbs!

Underneath all the bench racing rubbish that the pair of them have managed in the last few posts has been the most important piece of advice anyone could get when buying a 300.

on years, I would go for a narrow window of 86-87 360s they had the best looks and highest torque engines. 87 GLTs maybe low compression though.

The later low octance/low compression cars are a real let down as a result of the lower compression. They do have PAS which is nice and more special editions with leather and so on.

Of course if you are just looking for a run around the 1.4 is economical and fairly reliable, its just not as luxurious and drivable as a 360 though. I have a pet hate for the 1.7s.
