OK, I too thought that a second hand V50 2.0D with 78000 on it would go for another few miles. I bought it 2 years ago (07 plate). Since then I've done 40,000 miles, had 3 wheel bearings replaced, front discs, coil, all glow rods as it was having trouble starting, still trouble starting and the garage says it is 90% sure it is the DMF now, aircon is blowing warm and the ''Computer'' can't find a fault with it, no leaks etc, there appears to be an exhaust type rattle when driving over very small bumps, but exhaust looks ok.
I got rid of a 12 year old Audi A6 for this heap, car takes ages turning over in the morning, even after a run it won't fire up first time.
Other than calling Esther Rantzen and asking her to bring back 'Heap Of The Week' is there anything I can do other than pull what remains of my hair out??

Your bad starting is probably down to one of the common problems on the diesel.

You need to be looking at air in the fuel pipes, air bibles in the clear pipe by the fuel filter housing. It could be the fuel filter/housing itself and the vey common you should look at throttle body and crank sensor. Almost positive your bad starting will be one or a combination of these??

Front discs are pure wear and tear and can't be counted, although if replaced did you use genuine Volvo??

Same goes for wheel bearing really, one can fail - fair enough! Three failures is excessive but is this same one failing of just other ones that have not been replaced? When they were replaced did you use Volvo or generic bearings?? My T5 is a little shy of 140,000 and still on original bearings.

You can often get noises that sound exactly like wheel bearing has gone but is attributable to the tyres. I would hate to guess how many bearings have been replaced without need on these vehicles.

Were the old glow plugs actually tested? Age and mileage suggests a new set wouldn't have been a bad idea anyway but I suspect they had little to do with your bad starting unless it was winter time. Thoughts are they were probably still okay.

DMF is not going to have an effect on your starting. Well certainly nothing to do with churning and not firing anyway.

Have a check of your leak off pipes, just popped in my head. This would give your exact symptoms as well for bad starting.

It was MOT time last week and guess what?? Yet another wheel bearing! At least thats all of them done now. Of all the issues with the car,the limp home mode worries me the most,as you have no idea when you are going to have no power. Is it going to be when i pull out of this junction onto this dual carriageway? Is it going to do it overtaking this lorry? Does anyone know of a throttle cable upgrade??
