Default XC60 mud flaps make much difference?

The way I travel to work goes down some lanes and past a few farms so by the end of the week my car is absolutely filthy, especially down the sides and rear. Was thinking of fitting mud flaps but was wandering how much of an effect they have in really filthy conditions.

They will make a slight difference you will find. The Volvo ones or their copies are not sufficiently large to make any significant improvement in mud spatter. However they are cheap enough and easy to fit so it's worth trying them to see. I have them front and rear.

As I thought. Had similar design ones on a Ford focus and they didn't really make much of a difference in foul conditions.

We're the same. You will notice a difference and it will make the car easier to clean.

Can anyone post a photo or link to good ones? I just put a deposit down today for a 2016 D5 and I'm picking it up Friday

I have them on a 2017 T5 and they will not prevent all mud spatter on the front doors, although I run 255 width ATR tyres, which, depending on the steering angle, will throw mud. This is not why they were fitted though.

You need the front ones to limit the stones thrown up on gravel roads when eg touring Namibia. The left front wheel launches the sharp stones worked out by the grader and road usage, meeting the rear tyre on its way down to the road surface, penetrating the tread.

The reports from locals are that should you get a puncture, 90% of the time it will be the left rear tyre.

The rear ones are there as a courtesy to the windscreen of the guy overtaking you on that same road, or fellow members of your convoy.

If you buy the Volvo branded ones though, they really are NOT cheap, as stated above. They come in seperate sets for front and rear.

But they look nice :-).

Here is the mud spatter pattern.

You can see how the 255 vs 235 tyres sneaks the dirt past the mudflaps. Possibly with standard tyres it will be better?

Thanks ibates. So we now have two references.

Next we need someone to take the flaps off on one side and repeat the exercise.

Any volunteers? It's for the sake of science :-).

I think they are too small to make a difference. I have some spare carpet tiles in black if you want them !!!
