Default 01 v70 strut extends thru hood

Strut bolt(center) has pushed its way thru rubber to the point it has dented hood and almost gone thru. My question is what do I replace to fix problem . This is second time ,first went to local Volvo guy.

Hi,
your spring seat has a metal insert that locates the damper rod, if the rubber encasing it deteriorates, or an inferior part was fitted, then you get what you got, so to speak.

New spring seat required, and a hammer and dolly for the hood. lol.

You're going to need spring compressors to disassemble the strut and good quality tools to get the strut off in the first place.
Unfortunately, you just can't tell exactly what you'll need to replace until you've taken things apart so you either buy everything first or wait.
The job is actually straightforward but....... if you don't work on cars, this isn't a job to start on.

Don't need pics, your spring is in an un-contained state now, you, or a garage need to remove road wheel, get compressing tools onto spring and compress about 5 inches, then remove top disc, all this disc does is retain strut/spring assembly to the turret when jacked up, and on heavy rebound, on static compresson, its doing nothing at all.

Once spring is compressed, then strut can be remove , its only held by 2 bolts on the swivel hub, and also remove the anti-roll bar drop link from strut,,,,

Now its free to remove, but of critical importance is that the spring compressor tools have a safety catch mechanism to avoid a disaster like the compressors slipping round or off, thus allowing the spring to violently decompress.

The strut should be ok to re-use, as should the spring and top bearing, just the spring seat has failed.
If your at all unsure of what your doing, DON'T attempt this please. springs are dangerous.

Costs.. 1 spring seat, 1 hours labour (plus tow) and check other side !!

I know an expirienced mechanic with a lovely scar on his right cheek who can attest to that!
Got caught out on an unfamiliar car and removed a nut first, which should have come off last. Lucky not to lose an eye!

I fully agree in the safety issues! But you are missing an important part, the stop washer part no 312 01 386. This part must be fitted under the spring seat on the shock absorber shaft. If it has rusted away the shock absorber will make its way through the spring seat and up into the hood.
