The 964 and 965 both have nivomat self-levelling units as standard, but the 964 has a completely different suspension set up.

It is a proper independent suspension.

To quote the original brochure:
"The final drive is held in a special rear-axle member on rubber bushings and the rear wheels have individual suspension similar to that of the front wheels. This means that the unsprung weight of the rear carriage is very low for a rear-wheel drive car. Vibration and torsional forces are absorbed effectively by the rear-axle mmber and steering links, which control the wheel angles throughout the springing movements. This provides the same advantages as a live rear axle: practically constant wheel angle and tracking width. the multi-link axle offers excellent roadholding and outstanding characteristics in slippery conditions."

"The estate has a different solution - a live rear axle held by torque rods in a special rubber mounted subframe, This design provides lower overall weight and gives the estate a higher load capacity. Load compensation is standard on both saloon and estate. Regardless of load, the level of the car is always optimised. This prevents you from dazzling oncoming traffic and ensures that the car's driving characteristics remain consistent."

Cheers,

T
