Hi
I'm interested but the mileage puts me off a bit to be honest. I know that apart from 3rd gear problems M90 boxes are pretty good, how may miles can they do and still be ok ?

I bought the car as a non runner to do up. Nothing wrong with the gearbox as far as I know. Previous owner was a painter & decorator probably an animal as I've never seen a 97 Volvo in such a state.

I'm not sure at the moment. Although I would like to fit a manual my car has only done 75k and the auto in it is still in good condition. I don't want to fit something that might cause problems after a few thousand miles.
Would it take much to make the car run so the gearbox could be tested first ?
I still wonder if getting a whole car might be better. I will need an axle and if the engine was a turbo one I might as well fit that as well. You haven't said, the car you have is a petrol one isn't it ? Diesel gearboxes are different as far as I know.

Thanks again for you offer.

Hi,
The engines shot. Supposed to of been run low on oil. But on investigation over a year ago theres a water problem as well.
Yes it is petrol. I would've of used the box myself by now if it was an M90 with a Diesel bell!
Are you sure the axle ratio is different between auto & manual.

I'm guessing as I don't know for certain. My one is 3.91:1 and I would have thought the manual turbo would be 3.3 or 3.5 as they have more torque. It isn't hard to check to see what the ratio is if the sticker is still on the axle. It might be ok but it will end up costing loads more if I have to get an axle seperately.
The scrappy near me has a 940 diesel with an M90 or did have but they want a lot for them unfortunately.
I'm thinking of getting a whole car with all the bits I need, then putting the auto back into that.

Thanks for the offers of bits. I have been thinking about fitting a turbo on the car as well so have finally got a good complete car to swap the bits from. I will need loads of little bits to do it all properly including brake pipes etc to allow the ABS unit and airbox to be moved.

Hi Craig, The gearbox was a O/D type from a 1992 940 2.0 HPT. It had 165k miles. As I only drove the car 2 miles home ( a few years ago), I do not if it is noisy, but all the gears worked.

BTW I am Volvo-less at present as the 945 needs a M90 gearbox and EUR 861 Road Tax. I had used up the spare one already ( 3rd gear gone on both ). I will eventually convert the car to 2.0 , get a gearbox and sell it. My current car is a 2000 Punto 1.2. Hope to get back to a Volvo some time in the future.
