HELP ... every time it rains, my lovely 1989 Volvo
either wont start or once going, cuts out when I take
my foot off the accelerator and almost gets me
killed at roundabouts and crossings.

WD40 sometimes does the trick and putting newspaper
around the distributor certainly helps but I cant
keep doing this.

Any suggestions would be really welcome. Thanks.

The most likely cause of this on a 1.7 is the distributor cap and rotor arm.
This is a weak point on these engines thats why Volvo charge a fortune for them, they stand to make a lot of money selling lots of them!
Try www.eurocarparts.com for a better price.
Colin.

THE DIZZY CAP IS PRONE FOR THIS, SPRAY IT WITH ELECTRICAL CLEANER. TRY AND PUT SOME GASKET SEAL AROUND THE BASE THIS SHOULD STOP MOISTURE GETTING IN. I KNOW THE PROBLEM AND IT IS A PAIN IN THE ARSE
