Default Look what just fell off the front end...

I was driving the 2005 XC70 Diesel gently just now and over bumps, there's a knocking noise like when you go over a loose manhole cover. Eventually it stops, but only because this clatters off the car and onto the road.

Yep, it's the bottom end of the spring around the front left shock absorber. Anyone had any experience of what part to buy and how hard it is to replace?

At least it's not banging any more...

Look up for Lesjofors possible the D5 may have different front ones (for heavier engine). I would replace at least both front ones and also get a Sachs spring seat if was never done before. Keep the strut top bearing because aftermarket ones appear to be of poor quality. The XC70 does break a coil spring now and then, for peace of mind I would replace all 4 at 100-120k miles

Cut the others to suit and save money on a lowering kit

I remember on my old 360 the lower spring seat metal cup bit snapped off on one side that was a sudden surprise lol a mate just welded it back on jobs a goodun

I would say I haven't had a car yet where it isn't straight forward, but for some reason volvo decided to put that extra nut on it above the spring seat which is a minor extra annoyance. I got the 30 quid tool but you can probably manage with some strong grips

Looks like the spring seat on the strut to me in which case you need a new strut.

Fairly easy job but you do need a heavy duty set of spring compressor.

Thanks for replies. Its definitely the end of the spring as I can feel the break further round into the cup and it corresponds exactly with the freshly exposed steel on the piece that came off. It almost looks like how cast iron shatters just by the by.

The two photos show two different issues. The first is a broken coil spring and the second is a broken spring seat; there's too much rust along the edge for that to have just happened.

There is nothing wrong with that spring seat , they have a cut out section on them by design, its just the spring that's broken , happened on my XC70 twice now.

another picture of a broken spring on an XC70 with the same cut out in the spring seat, with matching cut out in the rubber seat.

The XC70 must be different then. My S60, and from memory, my V70 has a continuous spring seat, hence my comment. If that is the case there's no need to change the strut, just the springs.
