Default going forward in reverse !!!

hi guy's n gal's this is my first post on here so please be gental with me.. i have an S40 1.8 1998 and its my first S40 as iv always had 850's, it has 102,000 and i have done 11000 of those completely trouble free... until last week ! my car started jerking and losing power at random time's sometimes for a split second and some times for the rest of a journey i'd leave it over night the next moring it would start fine and drive fine for about 20mins then the same again a volvo specialist put it on the diagnostic and it said coil 1 had a problem.. that was replaced but then the diognostic said coil 2 had a problem and that was replaced.. no different the car would still randomly run on 2 cylinders, took it to a volvo main dealer they replaced the sparkplugs and checked the HT leads.. no different, the problem kicked in big time earlier today and i managed to crawl home but now when i put it in reverse it goes forward like i'v selected first.. all the other gears work perfect but there was a kind of burning smell but that might of been where i had to push it so hard to get home... any help at all with this would be hugely appreciated, thank you
