V40 clutch / flywheel
I have a V40 (2000) and the clutch has gone (screeching loudly). Been to several garages and none of them can know if it's dual mass or not. It's gonna cost an extra £500 if it is and I don't think it's worth paying that much for a car that old. Can anyone tell me if it is dual mass or not or where I can find out?

The screeching is more likely the thrust bearing.
Go have a look on eurocarparts website, put your reg in and search for clutch. If it comes up with dual mass flywheel, then you have one. It still might not need changing though. Rob |

If it is a squalk noise as the clutch engages this was a known problem at the time , completly non detremental . The cure under warranty was to fit the turbo clutch ... There were no dual mass flywheels on the V40 volvo petrol engines in 2000 .

Very few petrol engines, if any, have DMF's (especially back in 2000). These were developed to cope with the extra torque exerted by the modern high output Diesel engines. At low revs the "thump" from the piston on a modern Diesel is enough to tear a clutch apart.

I might be wrong but i think volvo were the first manufacturer to use these dual mass flywheels in 1994 to cure a take off vibration on the petrol 850 . When this flywheel was fitted as part of the cure , a label was fitted under the bonnet to advice part numbers for a new clutch ...
