swapping 2011 V70 headlights with 2015 causes bulb errors
I have always hated the orange headlamp side reflector and have coveted the post 2013 models with white reflectors. So, my original halogen units had become a bit internally crazed and I decided the time had come to swap to clearer ones. I bought some very good, low mileage 2015 units and swapped them over. Quite surprised how much more light now gets through with pristine units - the slight internal crazing I had in the original headlights clearly dispersed even more light than I realised!
One BIG problem, though... The "facelift" headlights are exactly the same as the 2011 ones - EXCEPT the forward facing front position light (side light to us oldies) is now a built in LED unit, which throws up bulb failure errors. I had done an LED conversion on my old units and added a ballast resistor (OSRAM) into the wiring to stop this happening. On the new headlights, though, there is no obvious wiring to add one in to. Can this be switched off in VIDA? Has anyone done this and found a solution? Interestingly, I discovered when doing the swap over that the mounting for the original orange side position light (behind the reflector) is still part of the new headlamp, however there is no bulb or wiring included (was always a US market "thing" that we had to put up with.... I removed those bulbs when I bought the car and it sailed through MOTs since as it's not a UK MOT requirement.

It was not just a US thing. My 2012 Swedish XC70 also has the orange side lights. Together with the red light on the side at the rear, they increase the visibility of the car from the side.
Good thing. Whether you can turn the warning off in Vida or not I don't know, but since there was no reason to make that possible, I doubt it. |

I found the solution to the bulb failure errors - the new built in LED sidelight unit still uses the same thin brown and black wires as the original filament bulbs, just tucked away more carefully. they plug into the side of the new unit. I attached two of the Osram ballast resistors for 5W bulbs and all is now fine - no errors.
