LOADING.KWI
File LOADING.KWI (14.7 MB, created 30.03.2015, unchanged from last map in 2016) is the nav OS software (unchanged so unlikely to be new version) It contains headers with the followig identifiers: CUP2006.MLD.ORG (the system type, P2006) 00000253 (the navigation core version number, v2.53) 00002308 (another version number, 23.08) B L D - C U - P 2 0 0 6 2 . 5 3 N A V I C O R E ( S H 7 7 7 0 / S H 4 A ) 3 r d C u t (looks like an identifier for the navigation core) The 2.53 matches the 00000253 number in the file header, so this is the navicore version number T h i s K e r n e l w a s b u i l d f o r S H - 4 C a r N a v i g a t i o n S y s t e m . W i n d o w s C E F i r m w a r e I n i t Ahhh... Windows CE!! I wonder what version? C:\WINCE420\PUBLIC\CUP200~2\WINCE420\CUP2006\cesys gen\oak\target\SH4\retail\secur32.pdb I guess WinCE v4.20 So who wrote the software? Let's look further.... C:\P2006\03_RUBY\RubyProjectv2302\RubyProject\Navi \src\RubyUI\UI_MenuControl\main\UI_MenuControlP200 6.cpp Now thats interesting, that's the path to the cpp source files

Update all installed successfully in 210 minutes (3.5 hours) with a battery charger connected all the time.
Off for a 2 hour drive this afternoon, I will watch the nav to see how it goes. No idea what has changed. You never really know.

So loaded the new map on Friday and then drove to the mountains that afternoon.
On the way back I observed the nav system critically. At the start of the 2 hour drive it said we would be home at 20:34 It varied from 20:34 to 20:37 during the drive, and was back at 20:34 as we hit our home town. Only at red traffic lights at the last 23km, did it then creep up and eventually we arrived at 20:37 I was impressed! I wonder if they have tweaked the average road speeds to improved estimated arrival times?

Don't know, but I'm not happy as I upgraded my SatNav software a few months ago!

To add to the disappointment for those of us who updated recently, the Volvo website implies that updates within two years are available free for non-Sensus equipped cars and then says that its only available for non-Sensus equipped cars:
https://support.volvocars.com/uk/pag...a801517c751ed7 "If your car is equipped with a system that is not Sensus Navigation the map update option is still available, see the information for each system below." Click on the "i" between Europe and Autumn 2017 for XC90 MY07-14 and get the message: "For Europe, MapCareTM is included for two years. For more information, see MapCareTM." Click on the link and find out that MapCareTM is available for cars equipped with Sensus Navigation..... **sigh**

That's the way of the world: new is often better, those with the new enjoy the better options and features, while those with the old have other real benefits. What real benefits did I have by buying an older 2009 XC90 over the newer 2016 XC90 (when I bought my car 2 years ago)? A really BIG benefit: The purchase price was only 20% of the new XC90. So I saved around 60,000 GBP, and that means I can afford to spend a little money on maps every now and then. That's how I see the world...

In terms of the maps, it looks likem I misinterpreted the wording of their offer. I understood it as saying that if you purchased maps from Volvo and a newer version was released within two years that the update to the newer version would be free. I bought a maps update from a Volvo dealer last August and to keep up to date I would now have to buy another one with no price concession. That's fine I suppose but for a while I thought that there was an offer for more recent purchasers. In the section that says: Map updates for older navigation systems "If your car is equipped with a system that is not Sensus Navigation the map update option is still available, see the information for each system below." The XC90 MY07-14 is included on the list of cars to which this applies. When you click on the "i" beside Europe in that same section, you see a message saying: "For Europe, MapCareTM is included for two years. For more information, see MapCareTM." So I misunderstood as elsewhere on the site it says that MapCare only applies to Sensus equipped cars. Its a little amusing that the navigation on their website is not accurate, given the subject that its dealing with.

I totally agree, and it shows that all navigation systems contain navigation errors
