Engine failure XC60 2.4D D5
My XC60 D5 Engine failed just after a service & MOT ( Not at a main dealer )
The only job that was carried out apart from the normal fluid changes was a replacement alternator belt. 4 valves broken and now a replacement cylinder head required. Is it just a very unfortunate coincidence or could the be linked. 2010 and only 52000 miles. any comments appreciated |

Isn't it due auxiliary belt and pulleys around that mileage?
Was it a main dealer and what exactly was replaced including part numbers from the invoice?

Yes it should be due a tensioner and belt. It should have possibly had an updated tensioner fitted as well. It's strange you have had work done in this area and now it's failed. The tensioner on my v70 with same engine was the old style and lasted 94k so they don't all fail that early.

Is not the auxilliary belt what the OP means by alternator belt?
If so definitely in the same area and if poorly serviced and subsequently "derailed" may well have dislodged the cambelt and timing? Last edited by Lancee; Sep 7th, 2017 at 10:24. |

Just had a cylinder head fail, XC60 2ltr Diesel, 5 cyl, and 80,000 miles.
Caused by hydraulic tappets ceasing. New head needed. The failure was preceded over a month or so by increasing fuel consumption, wrongly assumed to be more local mileage, and increased clackety diesel noise for a few weeks before catastrophic failure and no.4 piston "misfiring". Initially assumed it was an injector fault until head inspected. Is this a common failure mode? |

Cylinder head failure
No work done recently. fully serviced etc. Not cam belt failure. Tappets ceased, it looks like both no 4 cylinder inlet tappets burst out of their bores.
you say not typical but Volvo dealer say five available. Also on mentioning to a friend he had a failure on the same 2 ltr 5 cyl diesel engine; thgough different cause apparently. Also looks like one of the most advertised heads on ebay etc. |

As an owner of the same engine, what is the year of registration? Was it driven daily? If yes, average miles?
