Engine?

There are 4 different 6 speed gearboxes used... All coupled to different engines:

D5/D4/D3: M66D (or W)
2.0d: MMT6
D2: B6D2
T5: M66W (or D)

Now, as the M66 is basically the same, it would be the question: what engine is it you have? All the boxes (except M66) have a different construction. Some MUST crunch, others WILL crunch and others SHOULDN'T crunch.

Default Not to hijack the OP's question, but ....

That's got my interest, Daim.

Given an M66 on a D5 (2008 C70), is that one that shouldn't, will or should crunch?

1st into 2nd can be difficult to get smooth especially when cold.
3rd into 4th is silky smooth when cold but has a definite 'snick' when warm.
It's only a 24000 mile car - 4k of them mine, since Christmas.

'Box design, or lots of local driving by the previous owner wearing lead boots?

It will crunch, but it shouldn't - if you get what I mean. New it shouldn't but with age it eventually will.

The gear change mechanism has been made so "soft" and "indirect" to make it switch with ease but at the same time can cause the odd crunch noise.

Just so you have a comparisson: the MTX75 (1.6d, 1.8, 2.0) WILL crunch and SHOULD crunch. If it doesn't, then something is wrong... And that isn't a "crap" saying. The MTX is a crap box and if it doesn't make the crap crunch noises, something is def. wrong!

I believe it is the mmt6, and looking at the haynes manual diagrams for gearboxes that the 5th and 6th gear rails are at the top of the gearbox i thought it might be low in fluid or old etc. so i drained and put new oil in. I refilled it by the side filler plug behind passanger front wheel.

It didnt make any difference to the drive sound.

Siftyseamus,

are you replying to me that your car does the same noise whilst on motorway etc. driving in 5th n 6th?

I got my car before xmas and it seems to have got this noise since xmas, some great present that was lol.

Mines done 150k miles now, I wish i had kept my P38 4.6 V8 range rover which was smooth and sounded great but as i travel to work it cost me £50 per week whereas the V50 costs me £20 ish.

I only got rid due to baby on way of which hes here 2 weeks ago.

Mine has done it since about xmas, how long has yours been doing it???

I'm thinking of selling not because of this sound but need more boot space due to baby arriving.
