Default Key FOB Re-Programming?

Hi,
I need to purchase a second FOB for my 2010 V70 as we only have one of the two left and it's only a matter of time before we are in a rush in the morning and can't leave because the one and only FOB has gone AWOL.

What I'm trying to figure out is what work is required to get the FOB working with the vehicle. The dealership has suggested that there is a small fee involved to "purchase software" to get the key programmed to the vehicle + the cost of the FOB itself.

If I have access to VIDA/DICE, can I do the programming myself? The FOB in question is part #30659637. It is the push/start type.

On a related note, I don't think I'm going to bother with the additional $50 valet key...that's a pretty steep price for a key!

Hi I dont know about Canada but in the UK Volvo are very strict re key programming. It can only be done via a main dealer. The last key I bought for a P2 cost me just over £100 with the programming .
On the same theme our lords and masters at the EU world had a brain wave and made a rule that programming gear should be available to all garages . Suddenly the gear was available on e-bay and guess what ? The car thieves bought it and are currently stealing new BMW's , Audis etc. Fortunately I dont think Volvo caved in . So its probably best if its a Main Dealer job only . At least you will still find your car where you left it

Good point - hadn't thought of that angle. In that case, I'll buy the key from an online OEM supplier and then bring it in to the dealership for a reaming...

You might be better to get the dealer to do everything .If there is a problem he will sort it out for you without extra cost unless you know somebody In the trade.

We stay in Scarborough when we are out your neck of the woods.
If I was younger I would emigrate.

Thanks - it's a good point but the difference in cost between getting stuff here in Toronto vs ordering in the USA and driving down to the border to pickup is sometimes ridiculous. In the case of this key. The price here is almost double! However I may just hold off as they are saying it's one hour of labour say 65 quid, then another 12 for software AND an over priced key FOB. Wow.

Scarborough is a nice spot...there is always retirement however I think you would do better to select a warmer destination.

The wife did her education out there ,She knows more about out there than over here
At least its not as cold as Edmonton in the winter..
The people are top notch as far as im concerned.Work hard and play hard.Just your tax system sometimes sucks. I don't like some of your beer either .I am partial but have to import Crown Royal black.
Have you thought of getting someone over in the uk to send over a key?
Drove a V70 like your over there.

They do come up on Ebay fairly often.

You could buy one through Ebay UK where the seller allows the new 'Ebay Global Shipping Programme' (Google it) which is pretty much all the time.

Assuming that you have the five button fob £20/£25 will buy you one that is unbashed and has a key that is uncut.

I am not sure how much it will then cost to get it reprogrammed your end so if say you are only saving the equivalent of £20 ish overall you need to decide if it is worth the fannying about compared to just getting a dealer to sort the whole thing.

Scrap all of the above they are on Ebay Canada anyway, I am not saying this is the one to buy but have a look so you get the idea http://www.ebay.ca/itm/Remote-Smart-...283d87&vxp=mtr

Thanks - very interesting. The details have got me really curious: you need to bring the fob to a "qualified locksmith...the dealer will not be able to reprogram this key." Time to make some calls. It's a fair bit of coin saved IF this works so I will definitely investigate.

Hi A far as I'm aware a fob has to come with a code for programming purposes so a second hand or an as new unused one is unlikely to have this . Main dealers are supposed to destroy it after programming a fob for your security. Secondhand fobs are only good for the spare case and that is available from Volvo as a not too expensive spare anyway. Check with your Canadian dealers that they will be able to programe before buying one on e-bay . This was a frequent thread in the P2 V70 section at one time with a lot of disappointed buyers .
