2008 V70 D5 Geartronic engine shuts off while driving
Hi, I got a rather annoying and potentially dangerous problem.
Engine shuts off while driving, it happened a few times now. Coming to the roundabout or lights, but always when slowing down - 10-25mph. Stopping and restarting the car works, but sometimes it dies straight away after restarting. Few times car had power loss for a few seconds, a couple of times it died on red lights, It only happens when the engine is not fully warmed up, 1-3 miles after starting. When the engine is fully warmed up it drives great, plenty of power etc. I thought it might be bad fuel so put a full tank of Texaco Supreme Diesel 100 miles ago, no difference. Yesterday my local Volvo specialist put a new genuine fuel filter. The car doesn't display any faults connected to the computer or on the dash The problem doesn't occur all the time. Yesterday was fine, today was playing up. Car is V70 D5 185 Geartronic. Any thoughts? Thanks! Last edited by Kamilll1982; Jun 27th, 2019 at 22:18. |

Someone who has specific experience of this fault may be able to help you but until someone does, I'm wondering if the fault is connected with a temperature sensor giving an out of range reading which has an effect on engine running while the engine is cold but which becomes in range when the engine temperature climbs to normal running level. I know I definitely had this problem on a petrol engine car when the coolant temperature sensor was reading too high and was telling the ECU that the engine had reached optimal operating temperature when it hadn't. It was the equivalent of running without the choke all the time. The fault wasn't picked up as a warning because the ECU hadn't got a way to decide if the temperature reading was accurate or not and merely responded to whatever reading it received. Since your car is a diesel I do not know if there are temperature sensors which would be used to adjust cold running. You certainly do have a mechanical thermostat and that might be the problem.

Thanks for your reply, I was thinking about the coolant temperature sensor. Is it hard to replace by yourself?
Had a computer check today. Showing some electrical faults, but it doesn't mean anything to me Volvo specialist suspecting swirl flaps at the moment. Got picture of the faults IMG_20190628_203353_resize_92.jpg IMG_20190628_203415_resize_99.jpg |

I had a similar problem back in May this year......but mine would not start again. Volvo assistance called out.......
So loads of possibly unrelated errors and a lot of scratching of his head he proceeded to give the throttle body a few light taps........it then started !!! He removed the air box and air hose and gave it a wipe...not unduly dirty was his remark...........not happened since. Hope this helps. I notice on your second picture that you have a transmission DTC which is still active....has the transmission fluid ever been changed ? Check if it's still nice and red...................................lot's of threads on here...........

Hi, thanks for replying. Transmission fluid with flush was done week ago.
Only active dtcs are current faults? There are few marked ones by garage that are showing not active. Thanks |

Say for instance, you tell the garage the date and approx time of the last time it shut down and the timeline for marked codes corresponds to it.Then that is why they marked them. Have a look here - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=G67pUI5vMrc If you can do it yourself it's a cheap fix if it cures the shutdown....if it does not then at least you know it's clean. After my shutdown the engine would start but shutdown again immediately as the flap had stuck in the closed position not allowing air in.
