Was that rolling code or fixed code?

Locksmiths have checked my key and say it's not possible, as DaveNP says, it's a "rolling code" it changes each time and they're unable to clone it, only the Volvo dealers can deal with it.

Another live & learn moment , sorry if I raised any hopes . But it did work // has worked on several cars . I presume newer vehicles are trying to outsmart the smart-ish people

No problem, It's a long running theme in this forum, it doesn't help that Volvo actually changed it around the middle of 98 for the V70 (not sure about the S and C) so not even as straight forward as at the point of change from 850 to x70. It is the 'modern' way to go, my wife's KIA has rolling code keys but they are not quite as expensive as Volvo.

It is certainly a far cry from my first car, David. That had the key number, e.g. FP123, stamped on the lock - and that was ignition only of course, no steering locks then!

Some cars, the basic Standard 8 was one, didn't even have a key, just a switch on the dash.

Regards, John.

On my Ford Fiesta they printed jokes on the keys....

or am I confusing that with the ice lolly stick that worked just as well as a Ford key?

Those keys are still available new from classic car parts suppliers.

I remember my Mother's Vauxhall 25hp (which she bought from her Father) was a pre-war design and had a key to turn on the ignition switch in the dash. The starter was however activated by pressing the clutch pedal.

Reds
I have a fleet inc Lenny the blue 98 V70R

When Volvo converted their manual records to digital they smartly destroyed my code before recording it. Their arrogant and moronic response to my request to rectify at whatever cost was breathtaking but I did not and do not have the time to take it further. The car came with one key.

Steve at Braydons did his best but eventually said a second key could not be chipped. Made dozens of enquiries with various independents who stated the same

An independent in Leytonstone cut and chipped a key for me in 30 mins. He told me he did it via the immobiliser and the suggestion it cannot be done is bull****. Seems he was right
Best of luck !

Maybe it depends on who you find then but I've had no luck in Glasgow and I've done a fair bit of asking around.

I have all the parts to do the second antenna method so I'm going to go ahead with that and then be able to have unlimited keys at a much cheaper price.

Okay.. I attempted to do this today and my first question is... has anyone actually managed to do what I'm trying to do?

I think I've discovered that the software engineers at Volvo working 20 years ago are more intelligent and thoughtful that I had anticipated!

I do not think it's possible to wire in a second antenna ring and use this hidden antenna ring to activate the immobiliser.

You can see from the photo that I tapped all of the wires going into the antenna ring, I had these loose wires connected while I was testing and working out what wire was what (I identified that the thicker wires are for the light - which doesn't work on the replacement antenna ring I got, not that it mattered).

If you put the proper key by the second antenna ring it doesn't register and the car won't start, even if you disconnect the second antenna ring but move the current antenna ring off the ignition barrel and put the key on it, it still won't start.. I've tried every combination I can think of and I don't think it's possible.

I've concluded that the correct signal for the immobiliser must be some kind of combination of the proximity of the key to the ignition barrel and the antenna ring rather than just one of them, does anyone else have any opinions based on this?

I still think this may be possible with just the one antenna ring if I can place the proper key inside the ignition cowl very close to the ignition barrel and antenna ring.
